PAULA

PAULA is a half-open, long back, striped jusi barong in white jusi with blue stripes jusi, finished with long sleeves and a regular collar. Jusi — Filipino for “silk,” from the Chinese hu-shih — is reeled from the cocoon of the Bombyx mori silkworm; the towns of Bulacan, Bocaue, Malolos, Hagonoy, and Baliuag were historically its centers of production. This half-open construction is known as “pechera” (from the Spanish pecho, “chest”) — the oldest and most classic barong style, with embroidery concentrated along the chest opening. Tagged by the maker for formal occasions, graduation ceremonies. Part of the Mayumi line, categorized as ladies’ barong.
